Note to travelling surfers
- Ecosystem first. Be kind to the environment you’re visiting: don’t leave any trash behind.
- Be kind to locals. Every lineup has an order and it was earned over years. Wait your turn, and respect local etiquette.
- Fly less, stay longer. The flight is the biggest impact of any surf trip. Two weeks once beats one week twice!
The best surf spots in Canggu are Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa, Pererenan, Nelayan and Seseh. All six sit along five kilometres of west facing coast, all six work best from April to October, and between them they cover everything from a first green wave to a solid overhead reef session. Batu Bolong is where almost everyone starts.
Canggu is the single most popular base for visiting surfers in Bali, and it earns that on the waves rather than the cafes. The breaks are forgiving compared with the Bukit, there is a wave working on almost any tide, and you can walk or ride a scooter between all six in fifteen minutes.

What are the best surf spots in Canggu?
This table is for picking the right wave for your level and the tide. Figures are approximate. Canggu's breaks sit on a mix of black sand and shallow reef, so tide matters more here than it does at a pure beach break.
| Spot | Type | Skill level | Wave size (m) | Best tide | Crowd |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Batu Bolong (Old Man's) | Reef and sand, left and right | Beginner to intermediate | 0.5 to 2.0m | Mid to high | Very busy |
| Echo Beach | Reef, left and right | Intermediate to advanced | 0.8 to 2.5m | Mid to high | Busy |
| Berawa | Sand and reef | Intermediate | 0.5 to 2.0m | Mid | Moderate |
| Pererenan | Reef and sand | Intermediate to advanced | 0.8 to 2.5m | Mid to high | Moderate |
| Nelayan | Sand | Beginner to intermediate | 0.5 to 1.5m | Mid to high | Quiet |
| Seseh | Beach break | Intermediate | 0.8 to 2.0m | All tides | Quiet |

Batu Bolong, or Old Man's
Batu Bolong is the wave that made Canggu, and it is the most forgiving quality wave in southern Bali. It breaks over a mix of shallow reef and sand, rolls rather than pitches, and offers a long workable shoulder that suits a longboard as well as anything. Everyone calls it Old Man's, after the beach bar of the same name.
It is also, without much competition, the most crowded wave on the island. On a good morning there will be a hundred people in the water across the peak, ranging from first day beginners to very good longboarders. That mix is part of its charm and part of its risk: expect dropped in on, and expect loose boards.
The practical advice is simple. Surf it at dawn, or surf it at mid tide on a weekday, or paddle fifty metres north or south of the main peak where there is often a perfectly good and far quieter shoulder. It works from about knee high to comfortably overhead.
Echo Beach and Pererenan
Echo Beach is the step up from Batu Bolong, and it is where most people's Canggu trip actually improves them. It breaks over reef about a kilometre north, with a punchier takeoff, a faster wall and both a left and a right off the main peak. It handles more size than Batu Bolong and gets hollow on a bigger swell.
It is not a beginner wave. The reef is shallow at low tide, the current runs hard on bigger days, and the paddle out goes through the impact zone rather than around it. If you can consistently make the drop and turn at Batu Bolong, you are ready for Echo on a small day.
Pererenan, a little further north again, is the quieter alternative to Echo. Similar reef and sand setup, similar level of wave, noticeably fewer people. It has developed fast over the last few years but the lineup is still calmer than anywhere south of it.
Berawa, Nelayan and Seseh
These three are the escape valves when Batu Bolong and Echo are unbearable. Berawa sits just south of Batu Bolong and picks up a similar swell over a sand and reef bottom. It is a solid intermediate wave and considerably less crowded than its neighbour, though the beach itself has become busy with clubs.
Nelayan is the small stretch of sand between Berawa and Batu Bolong. It is the quietest beginner option in Canggu and a good place to practise without a hundred people around you.
Seseh, twenty minutes north past Pererenan, is a proper black sand beach break with almost nobody on it. It shifts around, so it is inconsistent, but on the right day it is the best waves to people ratio anywhere in the area. Worth the scooter ride when the south is packed.
Is Canggu good for beginners?
Yes, but with one caveat: the crowd is a bigger hazard than the wave. Batu Bolong itself is about as gentle as a quality wave gets, and Nelayan is gentler still. The problem is that on a busy morning there are more loose boards in the water than at almost any break in the world.
| Beginner option | Bottom | Wave size | Crowd | Best time to go |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nelayan | Sand | 0.5 to 1.5m | Quiet | Any time |
| Batu Bolong, inside | Sand | 0.5 to 1.0m | Very busy | Dawn or weekday mid morning |
| Berawa, small days | Sand and reef | 0.5 to 1.5m | Moderate | Mid tide |
| Kuta Beach, 40 min south | Sand | 0.5 to 1.5m | Busy but spread out | Any time |
Take a lesson for the first two or three sessions, even if you have surfed before. An instructor who knows the peak will put you in the right spot and keep you out of the way of the longboard traffic. If you have never surfed at all, Sri Lanka is a calmer place to have your first week.

Tides, seasons and when to paddle out
April to October is the season, and dawn is the session. The southeast trade winds of the dry season blow offshore here in the morning and swing onshore through the afternoon, so the clean window is roughly sunrise to ten o'clock.
| Condition | Best spot | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small swell, under 1m | Batu Bolong, Nelayan | Echo, Pererenan | The reefs need size to break properly |
| Medium swell, 1 to 2m | Echo, Berawa, Pererenan | Nothing | Everything works, take your pick |
| Big swell, over 2m | Echo, Pererenan | Batu Bolong inside | Beach breaks close out, rips build fast |
| Low tide | Seseh, Berawa | Batu Bolong, Echo | Reef sits too shallow and dry |
| High tide | Batu Bolong, Echo, Pererenan | Seseh | Waves fatten but the reef is safely covered |
| Nov to Mar, wet season | Nothing in Canggu | The whole west coast | Westerly winds blow it out, go east |
From November to March, Canggu is usually onshore and messy. That is not the end of your trip: the east coast at Keramas, Sanur and Serangan turns offshore in exactly the same conditions. Our Bali guide covers the coast swap in detail.
Where to stay in Canggu
Batu Bolong for walking distance to the main peak, Pererenan for quiet, Berawa for a middle ground. Canggu has grown enormously and traffic on the main roads is now genuinely slow, so staying near the wave you want to surf matters more than it used to.
| Area | Best for | Walk to surf | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batu Bolong | First trip, no scooter | Yes | Busiest, cafes and schools on the doorstep |
| Berawa | Balance of quiet and convenience | Yes | Beach clubs, wider streets, still central |
| Pererenan | Quieter stays, better waves for improvers | Yes | Calmer lineup, growing fast |
| Nelayan | Beginners wanting space | Yes | Small, quiet strip of sand |
| Seseh | Escaping Canggu entirely | Yes | Black sand, almost nobody, few amenities |
Something worth planning for. Most Canggu accommodation gives you a cold outdoor shower, and you will use it two or three times a day between surfs. Bottles get knocked over, go missing from shared bathrooms and leak in a scooter bag. One solid bar for hair, body and face is a small thing that makes a two week trip noticeably simpler.

Surfing in Canggu: locals and the environment
Respect the locals
Canggu's lineups are mostly visitors, which paradoxically makes the etiquette worse rather than better. Do not drop in, do not paddle around people who have been waiting, and give way to the Balinese surfers and instructors who are working there every day. If you are learning, stay on the inside until you can reliably control your board.
Respect the environment
During the wet season, currents and rivers carry significant plastic onto Canggu's beaches. Local organisations run regular cleans and they are always short of hands. Refuse single use plastic, refill your water bottle rather than buying new ones, and be aware that much of Bali's wastewater reaches the ocean with limited treatment. A solid bar means one fewer plastic bottle left on an island that is already struggling to handle them.
Summary
Canggu gives you six waves in five kilometres, a season from April to October and a wave working on almost any tide. Start at Batu Bolong or Nelayan, progress to Echo and Pererenan, and ride twenty minutes to Seseh when the crowds get silly. Come at dawn, bring boardshorts and nothing else, and accept that you will be sharing.

Frequently asked questions
Is Canggu good for beginners?
Yes. Batu Bolong is one of the most forgiving quality waves in Bali and Nelayan next door is quieter still. The main hazard is the crowd rather than the wave, so take a lesson for your first sessions and surf at dawn or on a weekday when the peak is less busy.
What is the best surf spot in Canggu?
Batu Bolong for beginners and longboarders, Echo Beach for intermediates and above. Echo is the better wave of the two, with a punchier takeoff and a faster wall, but it breaks over shallower reef and is not a place to learn.
When is the best time to surf in Canggu?
April to October, during Bali's dry season, when the southeast trade winds blow offshore here. Within that, dawn until about ten in the morning is the clean window before the wind swings onshore. May and September give you the best combination of swell and smaller crowds.
Can you surf Canggu in the wet season?
Rarely well. From November to March westerly winds blow the whole west coast out. The waves are still there but they are messy. In those months the east coast at Keramas, Sanur and Serangan turns offshore instead and is the better call.
Do I need to bring a surfboard to Canggu?
No. Every street near the beach has a rental shop, with everything from soft tops to good performance shortboards and longboards, and you can hire by the day. Bringing your own only makes sense if you are staying for a month or more.
How crowded is Batu Bolong?
Very. On a good dry season morning there can be over a hundred people across the peak. Paddling fifty metres north or south of the main takeoff usually finds a quieter shoulder, and dawn sessions are noticeably calmer than mid morning.
