The best surf spots in Sri Lanka are Weligama Bay for learning, the reefs of Ahangama and Midigama for progressing, Hikkaduwa for an all-round surf town, and the right-hand points of Arugam Bay on the east coast.

Pick the coast by month: the south-west is in season from November to April, the east from July to September. The water stays between 27 and 30°C all year, according to SeaTemperature.org, so leave the wetsuit at home.

What are the best surf spots in Sri Lanka?

The best surf spots in Sri Lanka sit in two clusters: the south-west coast from Hikkaduwa to Hiriketiya, and the right-hand points around Arugam Bay in the east.

How were these Sri Lanka surf spots selected?

We only listed breaks with their own page on Surf-Forecast.com or Surfline. Every "works best on" value comes from the spot's Surf-Forecast page (SW is south-west, and so on), and "varies" means it gives no tide. The level is our own cautious reading of the break type and hazards, so ask a local surf school before you paddle out. The months follow each coast's season, explained below.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is the all-rounder: a proper town with a beach break for easier days and three reef and point waves for when you want more.

Sri Lanka Tourism calls it one of the best surfing spots in the country, at its best in the dry season from November to March. The star is Main Reef, which Surf-Forecast describes as an exposed, consistent reef with a left and a right. It's also "likely to be crowded if working", over coral and rocks. Bennys is a left-hand reef with the same hazards, and North Jetty a left-hand point with rocks in the line-up.

The beach break looks gentler, but Surf-Forecast says it only works once in a while and flags dangerous rips. If you're still learning, go out with a local school.

Ahangama, Koggala and Unawatuna

Ahangama is where the south coast turns into reef country, and The Rock at Kabalana is its best-documented wave.

Surf-Forecast lists The Rock as an exposed, fairly consistent reef that's good at all stages of the tide. The catch? It's popular, and the hazard to watch is urchins, so pack reef booties.

Back towards Galle there are two more names. Koggala Beach has left and right reef breaks over submerged rocks, but it only works once in a while. Unawatuna is a point break that can get crowded, again with urchins and rocks. Both are worth a look if you're passing.

Midigama

Midigama is the progression zone: a cluster of reef breaks, so you can pick the one that matches the day.

Surfline files Lazy Left and Rams under Midigama, and Surf-Forecast adds Plantations and Coconuts. All four are exposed reefs that like a south-south-west swell and a north-easterly wind, and all four carry the same warning: rocks. That's the honest difference with Weligama next door. A fall here lands you on reef, not sand.

Reef sessions often end with a tuk-tuk ride back and everything in one wet bag. A solid bar is handy there: nothing in it can leak over your towel.

Back to the waves: just along the coast, the shoreline opens into a wide bay.

Weligama

Weligama Bay is the best place in Sri Lanka to learn to surf.

Surfline describes a horseshoe bay a few miles long where a dozen surf schools teach on "soft, crumbly beach break rollers", and calls the peak in the centre "beginner's heaven". Surf-Forecast adds that it's surfable at all stages of the tide.

With a substantial swell the bay becomes one big closeout, says Surfline, and Surf-Forecast notes that pollution may be a hazard, so keep your mouth closed when you fall and rinse off properly after your surf. Travelling with a stronger surfer? Fishermans is the reef option, with rocks to watch for.

Mirissa, Madiha and Hiriketiya

Further along the south coast, three more names are worth knowing: Mirissa, Madiha Left near Matara and Hiriketiya.

Mirissa and Madiha Left are exposed reef breaks that Surf-Forecast calls quite reliable in season. Both like a south-west swell and get busy when it's on, and Mirissa adds urchins to the rocks. Hiriketiya is a point break with lefts and rights, with one warning: "When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water".

Arugam Bay and the east coast points

Arugam Bay is the east coast's headline wave: a right-hand point less than 200 metres from town, with more right points up and down the coast.

Sri Lanka Tourism places the bay on the dry south-east coast, 320 km due east of Colombo. Surfline's spot guide explains the draw: Main Point is close to town and consistent, picking up more swell than its neighbours. The downside is the crowd. Surfline says it's "packed from dawn 'till dusk", and Surf-Forecast adds: take care of coral.

Arugam Bay surf spots

Surfline counts at least half a dozen right points within 50 miles. Four to know:

• Pottuvil Point: a sand-bottom right that can run for almost a kilometre on a good south swell (Surfline). Rideable on a longboard when tiny, but watch the boulders close to shore.
• Peanut Farm: "a fun, easy to surf right-hand point", seldom crowded because it's hard to find without a guide (Surfline).
• Whiskey Point: surfable at all stages of the tide and very rarely crowded (Surf-Forecast).
• Elephant Rock: another all-tide point where "the location means that it never gets crowded".

Further out, Okanda is an often empty right point, but Surfline says you'll need a guide and a minimum two-hour drive along dirt paths, and Surf-Forecast warns of strong rips.

Where should beginners surf in Sri Lanka?

Beginners should start in Weligama Bay in the south-west season and at Peanut Farm in the east coast season, always with a surf school.

If you are a beginner surfer

Weligama is the simple answer, and Peanut Farm is the gentlest of the east coast points. Be honest with yourself, though. If you are an intermediate surfer

Base yourself between Ahangama and Midigama and rotate The Rock, Lazy Left and Plantations. In the east, Whiskey Point and Elephant Rock are all-tide points without the Main Point crowd.

If you are an advanced or expert surfer

Go for Main Reef and Bennys at Hikkaduwa, Rams Right at Midigama and a solid day at Main Point, all over coral or rock. Want heavier reefs? Look at Bali or the rest of Indonesia.

When is the best time to surf in Sri Lanka?

The best time to surf Sri Lanka's south-west coast is November to April, and the best time to surf the east coast is July to September.

Here's the logic. Sri Lanka Tourism says north-east winds make the south-western coast sunny and calm from November to March, while south-west winds do the same for the east coast. The breaks agree. On Surf-Forecast, nearly all the south-west spots list a wind from the north to east-north-east as their best, and the Arugam Bay points one from the west or north-west. Each coast cleans up when the wind blows off the land: a January north-easterly at Weligama, an August westerly at Peanut Farm.

So do the statistics. Surf-Forecast names November to April as the favoured time at The Rock, and in the east its cleanest months are July at Pottuvil Point, August at Peanut Farm and September at Whiskey Point. See where else works in January.

One safety note matters more than any forecast. France's foreign ministry strongly advises against sea swimming on the west coast from April to November and on the east coast from December to March, because of powerful waves and currents, and reports that tourists drown every year at beaches including Hikkaduwa and Mirissa.

Getting to Sri Lanka from Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris

You get to Sri Lanka by plane: the main gateway is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, 30 km north of Colombo.

Sri Lanka Tourism also lists a second international airport, Mattala Rajapaksa, near Hambantota in the deep south. SriLankan Airlines sells Paris to Colombo flights on its own site. Every foreign visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival, requested on the official ETA portal. Once you've landed, the south-west coast is the easy part: Sri Lanka Tourism says trains connect Colombo with all tourist towns, and Sri Lanka Railways' online seat reservation lists a Colombo Fort to Beliatta service along the south coast. Arugam Bay lies 320 km across the island, so treat that transfer as a travel day.

Pick your base by level: Weligama to learn, Ahangama or Midigama to progress, Hikkaduwa for town life and Arugam Bay for the east coast season.

• Weligama: first-timers and mixed groups.
• Ahangama and Midigama: intermediates who want several reefs close together.
• Hikkaduwa: a real town with beach and reef waves.
• Mirissa and Hiriketiya: a slower beach holiday with a morning surf.
• Arugam Bay: July to September, with the main wave a short walk from town.

Showers, wetsuits and washing up

You don't need a wetsuit in Sri Lanka: Surf-Forecast describes the water as warm enough for boardshorts and a rash vest.

That keeps your bag light: a rash vest, boardshorts and reef booties (more in our guide to surfing without a wetsuit). Rinse the salt and sand off at your accommodation, not at the beach. Don't rinse shampoo or soap directly into the ocean or into beach showers that drain to the sea. Lather only where the water goes into a drain.

Surf camp bathrooms are often small and shared (see what surf camp showers are really like), so one solid bar for hair, body and face beats three bottles on the shelf.

Then hang your rash vest in the shade, ready for the next session.

Main Point is packed all day and Hikkaduwa's reefs get crowded when they work, so the basics matter: one surfer per wave, no dropping in, and no paddling straight to the peak. Our surf etiquette rules cover the rest.

Respect the environment

Hikkaduwa's coral sanctuary is, in Sri Lanka Tourism's words, a large shallow body of water surrounded by a reef, still home to exotic fish and sea turtles. Don't stand on coral, don't touch the turtles, and take your rubbish with you. Surf-Forecast already lists pollution as a possible hazard at Weligama. Let's not add to it.

Summary
