The best surf spots in France are Hossegor and Seignosse in the Landes for powerful beach breaks, Biarritz and Hendaye on the Basque coast for gentler waves, Lacanau in the Gironde for surf schools, and La Torche in Brittany if you'd rather head north-west.
In the south-west, Surf-Forecast names October as the month with the most clean waves, and the sea off Biarritz still averages 18.6 °C then (seatemperature.org). Brittany and the Vendée peak in March instead. From Amsterdam or Brussels you can do it all by rail: Eurostar to Paris, then a TGV from Paris Montparnasse.

What are the best surf spots in France?
These 20 spots cover the French Atlantic coast from north to south. Tide, swell, wind and best month come from each spot's Surf-Forecast page; level is the tourist board's where given, otherwise our reading of the hazards.

Brittany
Brittany is France's cold-water surf region: reliable beach breaks at La Torche, La Palue and Plouharnel that peak in spring and are often flat in summer.
La Torche, in Finistère, is the name everyone knows: an exposed beach and point break with quite reliable surf on all tides, often crowded, with rocks to watch for (Surf-Forecast). Brittany Tourism lists a surf school working near La Torche.
La Palue is a step up, best around high tide, with rips and crowds. La Guérite at Plouharnel is "very consistent" and unlikely to be too crowded. Pack for cold water: the sea off Brest averages 10.1 °C in March and 16.7 °C in August. More in our guide to the best surf spots in Brittany.
The Vendée
The Vendée has learner beaches at Les Sables d'Olonne and Brétignolles-sur-Mer and two serious waves, La Sauzaie and Bud Bud.
For beginners, Vendée Tourisme names Tanchet at Les Sables d'Olonne, Plage des Dunes at Brétignolles-sur-Mer and the Grande Plage at Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. For experienced surfers it names Bud Bud at Longeville-sur-Mer, where waves sometimes pass 1.5 metres and "the sea imposes its rules", and La Sauzaie, a fast, technical reef with rips and rocks. Like Brittany, this coast peaks in March and is often flat in summer.
Lacanau and the Gironde
Lacanau is the Gironde's surf town: an exposed beach break that works on every tide, with lessons for beginners and a pro contest that dates back to 1979.
Médoc Atlantique, the local tourist office, calls Lacanau the cradle of surfing on this coast and the home of the Lacanau Pro. Surf-Forecast says Lacanau Océan usually has waves, with rips and crowds to watch. For fewer people, the tourist office sends intermediates to Carcans and Hourtin, and beginners to Soulac-sur-Mer. Cap Ferret is rarely crowded but has dangerous rips.
Hossegor, Seignosse and the Landes
The Landes is what its tourist board calls the epicentre of European surfing: Hossegor, Seignosse and Capbreton share one sandy coast of powerful beach breaks.
What are the best surf spots in Hossegor?
La Gravière is the famous one, the wave Landes Atlantique Sud calls mythical. Seignosse Tourisme describes it and La Nord as powerful waves that host major competitions; for years the Quiksilver Pro here was France's only World Championship Tour stop (Landes Tourisme). Les Estagnots and Seignosse
Seignosse is the easier neighbour. Its tourist office says the sandbanks at Les Estagnots and Les Bourdaines suit learning, though Surf-Forecast warns that crowds can make Les Estagnots hazardous when the surf is up. Le Penon has dangerous rips and is the first beach to get lifeguards, from early May. Further north, Moliets, Messanges and Vieux-Boucau are less crowded.

Biarritz, Hendaye and the Basque coast
The Basque coast has the most variety: beach breaks at Anglet and Biarritz, reefs at Guéthary and Lafitenia, and a gentler beginner beach at Hendaye.
What are the best surf spots in Biarritz?
Côte des Basques is where it started. France.fr says the American Peter Viertel brought surfing here in 1956, hence the name birthplace of European surfing, and puts typical waves at 1 to 2 metres, best from mid to low tide; Surf-Forecast adds rocks and crowds. Grande Plage is reasonably consistent, with crowds and pollution as listed hazards, and Anglet's Les Cavaliers has very consistent waves all year. The reefs are for experienced surfers: Parlementia at Guéthary, an exposed right-hand reef that works on any tide, and Lafitenia, a right-hand reef and point, both with rocks and crowds. Belharra is one to watch from land: the Basque tourist board describes a giant wave of more than 20 metres.
Hendaye
Hendaye Tourisme calls its town the "green slope of surfing", like the easiest run on a ski hill. The beach has some shelter from west winds and the tide doesn't affect the surf, but there's a reef too, so watch for rocks. Next stop south: the best surfing destinations in Spain.
What about the Channel and the Mediterranean?
You can surf both, but neither is a reason to plan a surf holiday. Surf-Forecast lists Wissant in the Pas-de-Calais as mostly flat in summer and best in winter, with rips that make surfing dangerous. Le Prado in Marseille runs on windswell, gets crowded when it works and carries a water pollution warning. Surfing in France for beginners
France is a good place to learn if you pick a gentle beach and book a school: try Hendaye, Côte des Basques, Seignosse, Lacanau or Tanchet.
The hazard to understand first is the baïne. The SNSM, France's sea rescue service, describes a basin in the sand that fills, then empties out to sea as a strong current under a calm-looking surface. If you're caught, don't fight it: swim parallel to the shore and signal for help. The sea emergency number is 196.
Beginner
- Book a school with the École Française de Surf label, run by the French Surfing Federation since 1995: labelled schools only employ state-qualified instructors.
- Go in season: in the Landes, schools mostly run April to October and lifeguard posts are generally open June to September.
- Learn the flags: red-and-yellow flags mark the supervised bathing zone, and surfing happens outside it.
Intermediate
- Always wear a leash and never let go of your board near others.
- Mind the shore break: at high tide, waves can dump straight onto steep sand.
Advanced
- At La Sauzaie, Parlementia and Lafitenia, rocks are the listed hazard, so know your exit.

When is the best time to surf in France?
October is the best time to surf south-west France; Brittany and the Vendée are best in spring. Water temperatures are seatemperature.org monthly averages; swell and wetsuit notes are Surf-Forecast's.

Getting to France from Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris
The easy way is by train, via Paris.
By train. Eurostar runs direct from Amsterdam Centraal to Paris Gare du Nord in 3 hours 20 minutes, and from Brussels-Midi/Zuid in 1 hour 22 minutes. Cross Paris to Montparnasse, where SNCF Connect lists fastest journeys of 2 hours 2 minutes to Bordeaux Saint-Jean, 4 hours 6 minutes to Biarritz and 3 hours 21 minutes to Quimper. For Hossegor and Seignosse, get off at Dax or Bayonne and take bus 517; for Lacanau, take a regional bus from Bordeaux.
By car. The corridor runs via Paris and the A10 to Bordeaux, just over 5 hours from Paris according to Médoc Atlantique, then the A63 south (exit 10 for Seignosse). Taking a van? See our surf van trips in Europe.
By plane. Biarritz Pays Basque Airport lists Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels Charleroi, and Bordeaux Airport lists Brussels; check each airport's list for the current season. Hand luggage only? A solid bar isn't a liquid at airport security, so it stays out of your liquids bag.

Where to stay
Pick your base by level: Hendaye or Biarritz for a first trip, Seignosse or Lacanau for a surf camp, Hossegor for heavier waves.

Showers, wetsuits and washing up
Rinse with plain water at the beach and save the soap for a shower that runs into a drain.
Where a beach has a rinse shower, use it for sand and salt, with water only. Don't rinse shampoo or soap directly into the ocean or into beach showers that drain to the sea. Lather only where the water goes into a drain. We cover both in how to rinse off after a surf and surf camp showers.

Follow the priority rules in the water and stay off the dunes on land.
Respect the locals
Plages des Landes, the department's official beach site, sums up the rules: the surfer closest to the peak has priority, you paddle back out around the outside, and you don't take every wave. See our surf etiquette rules.
Respect the environment
Seignosse Tourisme calls the dune "our rampart against the assaults of the ocean" and asks you to use only the marked paths; the ONF, the national forestry office, describes unwooded dunes as fragile. On Landes beaches, campfires and wild camping are banned, and rubbish goes in a bin.
