Note to travelling surfers
- Ecosystem first. Be kind to the environment you’re visiting: don’t leave any trash behind.
- Be kind to locals. Every lineup has an order and it was earned over years. Wait your turn, and respect local etiquette.
- Fly less, stay longer. The flight is the biggest impact of any surf trip. Two weeks once beats one week twice!
The best surf spots in Senegal are Ngor Right and Ngor Left, Yoff Beach, Le Virage, Secret, Vivier, Club Med, Baie des Carpes and Ouakam, all packed around Dakar's Almadies peninsula.
Surf Simply describes that peninsula as the westernmost tip of continental Africa, open to swells from the north in winter and from the south in summer. The main season runs from about October to April, when north and north-west swells arrive, and the water stays far warmer than anything in Europe: seatemperature.org puts Dakar's monthly average between roughly 20°C in March and nearly 29°C in September and October.
From Amsterdam, Brussels or Paris you fly to Dakar's Blaise Diagne International Airport. Senegal suits confident intermediates and reef lovers best, with two soft beaches for learners, and it's one of our best surfing destinations in Africa. Senegal is outside the EU, so read your own government's travel advice before you book: the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, France Diplomatie or, for Belgians, the FPS Foreign Affairs.

Ngor Island: Ngor Right and Ngor Left
Ngor Right is the wave that put Senegal on the map, a right-hander off a small island that you reach by boat.
The World Surf League calls it "the iconic righthand pointbreak revealed in the movie The Endless Summer", the 1966 film in which Robert August and Mike Hynson paddled out here. In 2019 the WSL brought its Qualifying Series to West Africa for the first time with the Senegal Pro in Dakar, and contest director Oumar Seye said of Ngor: "This is where surfing in Senegal started."
Perfect Wave Travel describes a five-minute boat trip from the village, and Au-Senegal.com says you go by pirogue or by paddling, depending on conditions. Surf-Forecast lists Ngor Right as an exposed reef break that works at all stages of the tide and can get crowded, with urchins and rocks to watch for. Ngor Left is the island's left-hand reef, with the same urchin warning.
So if you're comfortable on a beach break at home but have never surfed over reef, start on a small day and wear booties.
The north coast: Yoff Beach and Le Virage
Yoff and Le Virage are the gentle side of Dakar, sandy and forgiving, and where most people learn.
Culture Trip states it simply: "Yoff and Virage are best for beginners." Yoff is a beach break over a sandy bottom that Surf-Forecast rates as consistent. Le Virage is a string of small coves that Perfect Wave Travel describes as having easy rights and lefts. In the WSL's travel piece, coach Philippe Malvaux calls it the beach "where we all learnt to surf" and says it's "pretty much always surfable". Surf-Forecast does flag rocks there, so ask your instructor where the sand ends.
A morning lesson here ends with a wet rash vest and a sandy bag on the ride back to your room. Whatever goes into that bag should survive being squashed, which is where a solid bar beats a bottle: one 3-in-1 bar for hair, body and face, with nothing to leak.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Keep your hair and skin healthy on the go. Monoï-infused scent with a touch of vanilla. Designed for those always on the go.
From the soft side of town, the coast bends west into something much sharper.
Almadies: Secret, Vivier, Club Med and Baie des Carpes
Almadies is a run of shallow reef breaks close together, so there's nearly always one working, but none of them are for beginners.
The WSL describes Les Almadies as "a very rocky stretch of coast with plenty of waves", where the wind blows offshore nine months a year. Culture Trip adds the warning that matters: the water can be extremely shallow, with rocks and urchins.
Secret is the everyday option. Surf-Forecast calls it an exposed reef with very reliable surf that works all year, and Au-Senegal.com describes it as a real meeting point for the local surf community. Vivier offers short left and right peaks and, in Perfect Wave Travel's words, "tonnes of urchins" waiting for you to wipe out. Club Med is the heavy one: Surf Simply describes "fast, heavy rights barreling over an urchin-covered reef". Baie des Carpes is a reef that Surf-Forecast rates best in winter and spring, with rocks and a wreck listed as hazards.
These reefs like different swells. Surf-Forecast lists Secret, Vivier and Club Med as best on a south-west swell and Baie des Carpes on a north-west swell. So when one is flat, ask around.
Ouakam
Ouakam is the picturesque one, a hollow A-frame reef that rarely breaks and leaves little room for mistakes when it does.
Culture Trip calls it the most picturesque surf spot in Dakar (Au-Senegal.com notes the Mosque of the Divinity towering over it) and says it needs "a decent level of surfing knowledge" because of the rocks below and the small take-off area. Perfect Wave Travel notes that the right doesn't break often but is powerful and hollow, and Surf-Forecast rates it inconsistent. If in doubt, watch from the beach.
Is Senegal good for beginners?
Partly: Yoff and Le Virage are good places to learn, but most of Dakar's famous waves break over shallow, urchin-covered reef.
If you're a first-timer, book lessons and stay on the north coast beaches. If you're an improver stepping up to reef, choose small days and listen to people who surf here daily. For an easier first warm-water trip, our guide to the best surf spots in Morocco is worth a look too.
When is the best time to surf in Senegal?
November to April is the prime window for north swells, and you can surf all year, because the peninsula also picks up south swells in summer.
Perfect Wave Travel puts the best time at October to April, Au-Senegal.com at November to March. One surprise: winter is when the water is coolest. The WSL explains that upwelling brings colder, deep water to the surface, so it "can be chilly". The temperatures below are monthly averages for Dakar from seatemperature.org, and the wetsuit advice follows Surf-Forecast.
| Period | Swell | Water temp (°C) | Wetsuit | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November to January | North and north-west swells arrive | 23 to 27 | Boardshorts and rash vest, shorty by January | Prime time |
| February to April | North and north-west swells | 20 to 21 | 2 mm long-sleeve shorty or 3/2 | Great waves, coolest water |
| May to June | South-west swells reach the Almadies reefs | 23 to 26 | Shorty, then boardshorts | Good for Club Med, Vivier and Ouakam |
| July to October | South swells | 28 to 29 | Rash vest for the sun | Warmest water |
So "warm winter" is true, with a footnote: pack a thin wetsuit for February and March. Lanzarote is the winter option nearer by, and Ireland is the cold-water opposite.
Where to stay in Senegal
Stay as close to your wave as you can, because every extra transfer eats into your surf time.
- Ngor Island suits surfers who want Ngor Right on the doorstep. Au-Senegal.com mentions a surf camp on the island itself.
- Ngor village and Almadies suit groups who want to move between the reefs and the island.
- Yoff suits beginners taking daily lessons on the beach.
If you fly with a board bag and hand luggage only, liquids get annoying fast. A solid bar is not a liquid at airport security, so it stays out of the clear plastic bag, and one bar does hair, body and face. More in our guide to taking soap on a plane.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Cooling, refreshing and designed for those always on the go.
Once you've unpacked, there's one thing to keep in mind.
Showers, wetsuits and washing up in Senegal
Fresh water is precious in Dakar, so keep showers short and do your washing at your accommodation, never at the beach.
Africanews and AFP reported in 2022 that Dakar is a water-stressed city where taps in some districts can run dry for two or three days at a time. As a visitor, the kind thing is a quick shower: wet, lather, rinse, done.
We couldn't find reliable information on public beach showers in Dakar, so don't count on them and wash back at your room. Don't rinse shampoo or soap directly into the ocean or into beach showers that drain to the sea. Lather only where the water goes into a drain. More in how to rinse off after a surf.
Surf camp bathrooms are usually shared, and on an island every bottle you bring has to be carried off again. One bar on a dry ledge is about as compact as a wash kit gets. See our tips on surf camp showers.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Keep your hair and skin healthy on the go. Monoï-infused scent with a touch of vanilla. Designed for those always on the go.
A shorty is quick to deal with: a brief fresh-water rinse and a spot in the shade.
Surfing in Senegal: locals and the environment
Respect the locals
Culture Trip notes that the majority of surfers you'll see in Dakar are Senegalese, and the WSL describes the vibe in the water as "super chill" and "extremely welcoming". Keep it that way: greet people, wait your turn, and don't crowd a small take-off zone like Ouakam. Its beach lies below a mosque, so cover up on the walk to and from the water.
Respect the environment
Just off Dakar lies the Îles de la Madeleine National Park, about 4 km west of the city. Senegal's submission to UNESCO's tentative list describes it as a natural paradise and a cultural site for the Lebou fishing community. Treat it, and every beach here, as somebody's home: take your rubbish, wax and broken leashes with you, and use fresh water sparingly.
Summary
Yoff and Le Virage look after learners, Ngor Right is the classic, Secret and Vivier are the daily reefs, and Club Med and Ouakam are for advanced surfers. Come between November and April, pack reef booties and a thin wetsuit for late winter, and go easy on the water. More ideas: where to surf in winter.
