Note to travelling surfers
- Ecosystem first. Be kind to the environment you’re visiting: don’t leave any trash behind.
- Be kind to locals. Every lineup has an order and it was earned over years. Wait your turn, and respect local etiquette.
- Fly less, stay longer. The flight is the biggest impact of any surf trip. Two weeks once beats one week twice!
The best time to surf in Europe is September to November in south-west France and northern Spain, December to February in Portugal, the Canary Islands, Ireland, Cornwall and Denmark, and March to May in Brittany, the Vendée and the Netherlands.
That's the pattern in the surf forecast statistics for one well-known break in each of 12 surf regions, from the North Sea down to Lanzarote. Summer is the small-wave season almost everywhere. This calendar is the timing companion to our guide to the best surfing destinations in Europe.
Every number here is a long-term average. It tells you when your odds are best, not what you'll get on the day, so book a full week and learn how to read a surf forecast before you go.
When is the best time to surf in Europe?
It depends on the coast: the cleanest month runs from October in south-west France to May in Scheveningen.
"Cleanest surf" is the month the surf forecast statistics pick for the named break, with the share of the time they count clean waves: rideable swell with light or offshore wind. Water temperatures are a sea temperature site's monthly averages, rounded. The wetsuits are surf forecasters' advice.

Where the sea temperature site has no page for the break's own town, we used another in the region: Thyborøn for Klitmøller, Audierne for La Torche, La Rochelle for Tanchet, Royan for Lacanau, Biarritz for Hossegor, Peniche for Ericeira and Arrecife for Famara. Our wetsuit thickness guide explains the suit numbers.
Where should you surf in Europe, month by month?
Follow the cleanest month from coast to coast: winter in the south and the far north, spring in western France, autumn in the Bay of Biscay. Each month links to its own guide.
- January: the surf forecasters' top month at Mundaka, a Basque river break that is often crowded.
- February: their pick for Fistral North in Cornwall and The Peak in Bundoran.
- March: cleanest at La Torche and Tanchet, just as the French sea hits its minimum.
- April: the sea starts warming: La Rochelle averages 12°C, against 10°C in March.
- May: the best month in the surf statistics at Scheveningen.
- June: the small-wave season begins. In Ireland, the summer sea is often flatter.
- July: lesson season. Several breaks go mostly flat.
- August: the warmest water of the year at every break in our table except Famara.
- September: the warmest month in Peniche, Sagres and the Canaries.
- October: cleanest at Lacanau, La Gravière and Playa de Gros, with the water at 18 to 19°C.
- November: in Ireland, the big Atlantic swells roll in from November onwards.
- December: cleanest at Ribeira d'Ilhas, Tonel, Famara and Klitmøller: 20°C water in Lanzarote, 7°C in Denmark.
Is autumn the best season to surf in Europe?
For south-west France and northern Spain, yes: October is the cleanest month in the surf statistics at Lacanau, Hossegor and San Sebastián, and the sea is still close to its summer warmth. At Playa de Gros the statistics count clean waves 51% of the time in October, at La Gravière 48% and at Lacanau 45%, while Biarritz's water averages 21°C in September and 19°C in October. Good odds and a thin wetsuit: that's the season we'd book first.
Mind the level: the local tourist office reserves La Gravière for experienced surfers, and surf forecasters warn of rips and crowds at Lacanau. Our guides to Hossegor, Biarritz, Lacanau and the Gironde coast and northern Spain sort the beaches by level, and our guide to the surf seasons in France goes deeper.
Where can you surf in Europe in winter?
All along the Atlantic, but winter splits Europe in two: mild water in Portugal and the Canary Islands, and thick-wetsuit surf in Ireland, Cornwall and Denmark.
December is the cleanest month in the surf statistics at Ribeira d'Ilhas in Ericeira (41%), Tonel in Sagres (42%) and Famara in Lanzarote (32%), with the water at 16°C in Peniche, 18°C in Sagres and 20°C in Lanzarote. Our guides to Ericeira, Peniche, the breaks near Lisbon, the Algarve, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands cover the spots, and where to surf in winter compares the warm-water options.
If you fly south with hand luggage only, the wetsuit takes most of the bag. A solid bar is not a liquid at airport security, and one 3-in-1 bar covers hair, body and face.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Cooling, refreshing and designed for those always on the go.
The north is a different sport. In Ireland, serious surfers call winter the best time, with big, powerful waves, but the trade-off is shorter days and colder air and water. Klitmøller's best month is December, in water that averages 5 to 7°C. We'd leave northern winters to experienced surfers: see our Ireland and Denmark guides.
Is spring a good time to surf in Europe?
Yes, above all in Brittany and the Vendée, where March is the cleanest month in the surf statistics, but spring also has the coldest water of the year. La Torche counts clean waves 35% of the time in March and Tanchet 37%. That same month the sea reaches its minimum of 10 to 11°C. So don't pack by the calendar: in March and April you still need the winter suit, boots and gloves.
That thick kit changes the drive home, too. It goes into the boot still wet, in the same tub as your wash bag, and anything that can leak in there will. A solid 3-in-1 bar has nothing to leak.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Keep your hair and skin healthy on the go. Monoï-infused scent with a touch of vanilla. Designed for those always on the go.
May is the best month in the surf statistics at Scheveningen, which means clean waves 12% of the time and too small 55%. North Sea surf is a go-when-it's-on game, as our guide to surfing in the Netherlands and Belgium explains. For western France, see our Brittany and Vendée and Charente-Maritime guides.
Can you surf in Europe in summer?
Yes, but June to August is the small-wave season: great for learning, frustrating if you want size. Summer tends to be mostly flat at Scheveningen, La Torche, Mundaka and Famara. The exposed breaks keep going: Lacanau, Fistral North, The Peak and Ribeira d'Ilhas can work at any time of the year.
What summer does give you is warm water and supervised beaches. Biarritz's beaches are supervised from April to October, depending on the period, and in Ireland beginners easily find suitable waves in the summer months. Our sister guide, where to surf in summer in Europe, names the spots that still pick up swell, and the best places to learn to surf in Europe are at their friendliest now.
Showers, wet kit and washing up in every season
The routine is the same all year: rinse the salt off with water only at the beach, and wash where there's a proper drain.
Don't rinse shampoo or soap directly into the ocean or into beach showers that drain to the sea. Lather only where the water goes into a drain.
Whether a beach shower runs outside summer varies from town to town, so in the cold months plan on rinsing where you're staying. Our guides on how to rinse off after a surf and how to get rid of wetsuit smell walk you through it.
Summer has the opposite problem: company. A surf camp bathroom in August is shared with a full house and the shelf is tiny. One solid 3-in-1 bar for hair, body and face is the whole kit.
Shampoo, body and face wash, all in one bar. Cooling, refreshing and designed for those always on the go.

Surfing through the seasons: locals and the environment
Respect the locals
The best month is everyone's best month. Surf forecasters flag crowds at Scheveningen, La Torche, Mundaka and Playa de Gros, and dangerous rips at Fistral North. Wait your turn, brush up on surf etiquette and, in a big swell, follow the standard sea safety advice and surf with a mate.
Respect the environment
Good timing is also a way to travel less: one well-chosen week beats three trips to a flat sea. Some of these waves are protected, too: Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve, the first in Europe. If the season suits a coast you can reach overland, see our guide to surf trips without flying.
Summary
Match the month to the coast. Go to south-west France and northern Spain in autumn, to Portugal and the Canaries in winter, and to Brittany and the Vendée in spring. Keep summer for learning, and pack for the water, not for the weather at home.
